The method of attentive prayer of Saint Callistus, Patriarch of Constantinople
Спосіб уважної молитви святішого Каліста, патріярха Константинопольського
The method of attentive prayer of the saintly CALISTUS, Patriarch of Constantinople, in the body of an ascetic, attentive in prayer, there are as if some kind of movements under the skin; some think of them as delusions. Heat also comes from the kidneys, as if girding them; they also think that it is a delusion. And in fact, these are not delusions, but natural signs that are generated by a prayer feat. When someone praises them, as if they are from grace, and not from nature, then this is really a delusion. But no matter what, the ascetic should not love these signs, but reject them. Yet another warmth comes from the heart, and if from it the mind descends into stray thoughts, then this is indeed delusion. When the whole body is warmed by the heart, and the mind is pure and dispassionate and seems to be attached to the deepest depths of the heart, then this is truly an action of grace. With whom such a thing happens, at times sweats from the great warmth that comes out of the body, and then a holy action will come out of the heart, which takes as if some leaf from the heart and moves the mind to the deepest depths, and the mind seems to adhere to the same Divine action and often cries: “My Jesus, my Jesus.” Immediately, as soon as the heart is opened, the mind only calls out: “My Jesus”, and because of the frequent opening of the heart, it cannot say all the words of the prayer “Lord, Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me”, it can only say “My Jesus”. And those who say that in such a state they can say the whole prayer – they are delusional. When the mind, as I have already said, adheres to the Divine action, having entered the deepest depths of the heart, it cannot call often, it can only say “My Jesus”. Then from this holy prayer there is also wonder from the heart, when there is great consolation from a holy action. Then the heart jumps and a tear flows from it with joy, it flows sweetly from the eyes, and this is joyful sadness. Then the heart boils from this great sacred action, and the whole body becomes inflamed. And calls the mind to wonder: “Lord, have mercy.” Like oil that boils from the heat in a large vessel on a fire and spills over the edges, so it happens to the heart: when it sees the Divine action in itself, it pours warmth into the body and makes it inflamed with it. Whoever feels this, it seems that all his entrails are bursting out of the body. There are also other glorious things with those who have reached such a state: sometimes there is light, that is why such a person sees enlightenment in himself, which illuminates him more clearly than the sun and pours light from the heart. There are other mysteries inside the heart that cannot be described. Because the mind sees all creations and marvels at the movement of holy action, contemplating the Divine mysteries, it sends forth from the depths of the heart words of wisdom that I cannot even write about. The whole person then becomes deified by that divine movement, finding himself beyond everything earthly and sensual, and cannot contain his joy, as if he had drunk a lot of wine. After that, she sometimes gets divine visions and sees terrible mysteries that I cannot describe in detail. Because the mind sees divine visions, sees the joy of the righteous and heavenly beauty. And when the mind is enraptured even higher, it sees wonderful and glorious mysteries in the heavens, and as much as a person is cleansed from the attachments of the opposite, so much more does he see, as the Holy Spirit gives him, to whom be glory forever. Amen.
