St. Nicholas Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Troy, New York

St. Nicholas Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Troy, New York, stands as one of the oldest and most venerable Ukrainian Orthodox parish communities in the northeastern United States. Established in 1897 by pioneering Ukrainian immigrants from the Carpathian Lemko and western Ukrainian regions, the parish has maintained an unbroken pastoral and liturgical witness in New York’s historic Capital District for more than 125 years. Situated at 376 Third Street in South Troy, the church building was consecrated in 1915, featuring a classic red-brick basilica design surmounted by a central belfry and five picturesque azure-blue onion domes crowned with gold three-bar crosses.

Historical Foundations & Early Pioneer Immigration

The genesis of Ukrainian communal life in Troy dates to the late nineteenth century, when rapid industrial growth along the Hudson and Mohawk rivers drew waves of European immigrants to the Capital Region. Ukrainian laborers, predominantly from the Lemko region and western Galicia under the Austro-Hungarian Empire, settled in South Troy to work in the burgeoning iron foundries, steel mills, collar and shirt factories, and rail yards that characterized Troy as the “Collar City.”

In 1895, these faithful organized the Brotherhood of St. Nicholas to provide mutual aid, fraternity, and spiritual sustenance to newly arriving families. Two years later, in 1897, the formal religious parish was founded. Between 1897 and 1902, the fledgling congregation was served by the legendary pioneer priest Father Nestor Dmytrow (Nestor Dmytriv), who also played an instrumental role in establishing the Svoboda Ukrainian newspaper and numerous early parishes across North America. Under Father Dmytrow’s visionary pastoral guidance, the community purchased an existing Methodist church structure at the corner of Third and Monroe Streets to host their liturgical assemblies.

As the Ukrainian community continued to expand, the wooden structure became inadequate to house the growing congregation. In 1914, the parish embarked on a comprehensive building campaign, raising funds through sacrificial household donations and theatrical evenings. The cornerstone of the present monumental brick church was blessed in 1914, and the completed edifice was consecrated with solemn festivities in September 1915. During the turbulent post-World War I era, following the rebirth of the autocephalous Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Kyiv in 1921, the parish joined the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA under the spiritual omophorion of Metropolitan Ioan (Theodorovych), reaffirming its Orthodox identity and cultural allegiance.

Architecture, Iconography & Sanctuary Splendor

The temple of St. Nicholas Ukrainian Orthodox Church is an architectural jewel of South Troy, harmoniously combining traditional Eastern European sacred forms with American industrial brick masonry. The prominent facade is constructed of deep-red brick accented with crisp white architectural trim, stone foundation water tables, and towering round-arched stained glass windows depicting biblical iconography and floral motifs.

The roofline is dominated by five azure-blue onion cupolas—a large central dome resting upon an open louvered bell tower, complemented by four flanking decorative domes atop corner pilasters. Each dome is crowned with a brilliant gold Ukrainian three-bar cross, serving as an enduring spiritual beacon over the surrounding urban neighborhood.

Within the interior, visitors and worshipers enter an expansive, radiant sanctuary beneath a barrel-vaulted ceiling painted in serene celestial blue and adorned with golden stars and seraphic iconography. The liturgical centerpiece of the nave is an intricately carved, gilded multi-tiered Ukrainian iconostasis containing canonical icons of the Saviour Jesus Christ, the Most Holy Theotokos, Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker, the Archangels Gabriel and Michael, the Twelve Great Feasts, and the Holy Apostles. Above the Royal Doors, an ornate ornamental arch frames the altar apse, creating a transcendent setting for the Divine Liturgy.

Parish Organizations, Cultural Life & Choral Legacy

Throughout its twelve decades of service, St. Nicholas Parish has functioned as a vital cultural, educational, and patriotic anchor for the Ukrainian-American community in upstate New York. Key parish organizations and cultural ministries include:

  • Parish Choir & Liturgical Music: Sacred choral singing has long been a crown jewel of St. Nicholas Church. For several decades, the choir was masterfully directed by Mychaylo Tcapar, whose lifelong dedication to polyphonic Ukrainian liturgical chants was recognized with archpastoral commendations. Today, under the direction of choir director Karina, the choir continues to lead the faithful in uplifting liturgical responses and traditional Christmas carols (kolyadky).
  • Sisterhood of Saint Nicholas: Dedicated to maintaining the beautification of the temple, sewing sacred vestments, and organizing parish fellowship meals, the Sisterhood remains central to the hospitality and warmth of the parish family.
  • Zorepad Ukrainian Dance Ensemble: Led by long-time parish council president Lida Kulbida, the Zorepad Ukrainian dance ensemble has represented the parish across New York State and New England, performing vibrant Kozak hopaks and traditional folk dances that pass ancestral traditions to new generations.
  • St. Nicholas Day & Youth Ministry: An annual winter highlight is the beloved celebration of the patronal feast of Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker, where children recite Ukrainian poetry, perform theatrical pageants, and receive gifts, fostering deep spiritual ties to their heritage.

Centennial Celebrations & Archpastoral Visitations

On September 13, 2015, the parish celebrated the historic 100th Anniversary of the consecration of its church building with a grand Hierarchical Divine Liturgy presided over by His Eminence Metropolitan Antony, Prime Hierarch of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA. The centennial brought together generations of parishioners, civic dignitaries, and visiting clergy from across New York and Pennsylvania, celebrating the sacrifice of the immigrant founders and consecrating a new century of faithful service.

In August 2024, His Eminence Archbishop Daniel, Ruling Hierarch of the Western Eparchy, made an archpastoral visitation to Troy. During this joyous weekend, Archbishop Daniel celebrated the Holy Mysteries of Baptism and Chrismation for Luke, the newborn son of pastor Fr. Vasyl Dovgan and Dobrodiyka Ilona, and bestowed upon Fr. Vasyl the ecclesiastical award of the gold pectoral cross in recognition of a decade of dedicated pastoral leadership.

Modern Parish Life & Humanitarian Aid to Ukraine

Following the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, St. Nicholas Ukrainian Orthodox Church mobilized as an essential center of humanitarian relief, advocacy, and refugee assistance in the Capital Region. The parish community has undertaken comprehensive wartime support initiatives:

  • Medical and Relief Shipments: Partnering with the Consistory of the UOC of the USA, the parish has raised thousands of dollars to purchase tactical medical kits, emergency supplies, and pharmaceuticals shipped directly to hospitals in Ukraine.
  • Support for Ukrainian Refugees: Fr. Vasyl Dovgan and the parish council have assisted newly arriving displaced Ukrainian families with temporary housing, legal paperwork, school enrollment, English language support, and clothing drives.
  • Continuous Prayer for Peace: The parish regularly serves Molebens for Peace in Ukraine, commemorations of fallen defenders, and memorial prayers for innocent victims of war, bearing witness to Christian justice and Ukrainian national freedom.
