St. Michael the Archangel Ukrainian Orthodox Parish in Baltimore, Maryland, is a historic maritime sanctuary, a pillar of Ukrainian Orthodox tradition, and a devoted community of faith serving the Baltimore metropolitan area and Chesapeake Bay region. Located at 2019 Gough Street in Baltimore’s historic Fells Point and Patterson Park district, the parish belongs to the Eastern Eparchy of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA under the canonical jurisdiction of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople, providing more than 75 years of continuous pastoral ministry, cultural witness, and frontline relief for Ukraine.

Seventy-Five Years of Maritime Heritage in Baltimore (1949–Present)
The parish’s roots were planted in the immediate aftermath of World War II, as Ukrainian refugees who survived totalitarian oppression and Nazi labor camps arrived at the Port of Baltimore. Finding employment in Baltimore’s thriving port shipyards, steel mills at Sparrows Point, and regional manufacturing centers, these courageous immigrants sought to build a permanent temple where they could preserve their Orthodox Christian faith and ancient Kyivan liturgical heritage.
In 1949, the congregation formally incorporated under the heavenly protection of Archangel Michael, Chief Commander of the Heavenly Hosts. Acquiring the handsome brick property on Gough Street in Fells Point, the parishioners transformed it into a vibrant spiritual hearth. In November 2024, the parish marked its historic 75th Diamond Jubilee Anniversary, celebrating three-quarters of a century of uninterrupted prayer and community service.

Sacred Architecture and Liturgical Appointments
The sanctuary at 2019 Gough Street radiates reverent prayerfulness and traditional craftsmanship:
- Gothic Arched Windows & Stained Glass: The chancel and side walls feature Gothic-pointed arched windows filled with colorful geometric and iconographic stained glass that cast jewel-like reflections across the nave.
- The Holy Altar & Iconostas: A canonical iconostas separates the holy altar from the congregation, adorned with revered icons of Saint Michael the Archangel, the Holy Theotokos, Christ the Teacher, and the Twelve Apostles.
- Ceiling Frescoes & Panikadylo: A curved barrel-vaulted ceiling painted in soft celestial tones is crowned by a sparkling brass-and-crystal chandelier, while traditional embroidered Ukrainian rushnyky adorn the tetrapod and analogia.
- Traditional Khoruhvy: Vintage liturgical processional banners (khoruhvy) hand-embroidered with scenes of the Holy Archangel Michael and the Resurrection stand vigilantly beside the chancel steps.
Devoted Pastorship and Honorable Ties to Ukrainian Armed Forces
For decades, the parish has been lovingly pastored by Very Reverend Father Vasyl Kryshtompol and Dobrodiyka Olga Kryshtompol. Father Vasyl’s devoted ministry has fostered an intimately connected parish family that warmly embraces newcomers and long-established families alike.
A unique distinction of St. Michael’s in Baltimore is its honorable connection to maritime service and the Ukrainian Navy. During the parish’s 75th jubilee, Ukrainian Navy officers—including Captain Mykhailo Brychkar and Captain Dmytro Lytvyn—as well as retired U.S. Navy officer George Melnychenko, were formally decorated with commemorative tridents bearing the UOC of the USA emblem in gratitude for their valiant service and support of Ukrainian sailors.
Humanitarian Mission and Relief for Ukraine
Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, St. Michael’s Parish has been an essential pillar of frontline support. Working through the Consistory of the UOC of the USA, Father Vasyl and the parish council have coordinated recurring aid drives, purchasing trauma emergency medical kits, surgical wound dressings, and winter relief supplies for civilian victims and wounded defenders in Ukrainian military hospitals.
Every Sunday, the parish family unites in heartfelt prayer for peace, freedom, and the complete victory of Ukraine against foreign aggression.
