Located at 505 4th Street NE in Minneapolis’s historic Northeast district, the parish was founded in 1925 and erected brick by brick in 1926. A Century of Faith in the Twin Cities (1925–Present)

In the early twentieth century, Ukrainian immigrants arrived in Minneapolis seeking employment in the flourishing grain milling industry, rail yards, and heavy manufacturing facilities along the Mississippi River. Yearning for a spiritual home where the divine services would be celebrated in their native tongue according to ancient Kyivan liturgical tradition, the community formally organized in 1925 under the dual patronal protection of Holy Archangel Michael, Defender of the Faith, and Saint George the Great Martyr and Victorious.

With extraordinary self-sacrifice, the immigrant founders pooled their modest wages, purchased the land parcel on 4th Street NE, and completed the construction of their brick temple in 1926. For a century, St. Michael and St. George Church has welcomed successive waves of Ukrainians: the pre-war pioneers, the post-World War II political refugees and intellectuals, and the post-1991 independence arrivals, fostering a thriving diaspora community complete with a Ukrainian school, choir, and cultural organizations.

Sacred Architecture and Interior Iconography

The sanctuary at 505 4th Street NE represents a harmonious synthesis of American brick ecclesiastical architecture and traditional Ukrainian Byzantine liturgical art:

  • Exterior Masonry & Portal Mosaic: The warm brick facade is highlighted by a pedimented portal sheltering a vibrant mosaic tympanum depicting the Archangel Michael with the sword of truth and Saint George the Great Martyr.
  • Belfry and Onion Dome: An octagonal white wooden belfry drum rises above the roofline, crowned by a traditional onion dome and a gilded three-bar Ukrainian Orthodox cross that catches the Minnesota morning sun.
  • The Masterpiece Oak Iconostas: The sanctuary nave is dominated by an exquisitely carved natural oak iconostas with openwork Royal Doors, surmounted by an icon of the Mystical Supper (Last Supper) framed within a brilliant radiating golden sun.
  • The Celestial Apse Fresco: High above the altar in the semicircular apse, a monumental mural portrays the Mother of God extending Her protective veil (Pokrova) over humanity, flanked by celestial archangels on an azure field, bordered by the golden Old Slavonic arch inscription: «БЛАГОСЛОВЕН ГРЯДЫЙ ВО ИМЯ ГОСПОДНЕ» (Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord).
  • Altar Murals of the Church Fathers: Behind the Holy Table, the curved sanctuary wall features magnificent golden Byzantine-style frescoes depicting Christ the High Priest Enthroned alongside the great Ecumenical Doctors: Saint John Chrysostom, Saint Basil the Great, Saint Gregory the Theologian, and Saint Athanasius.

Spiritual Bond with Sister Parish in Bucha, Ukraine

A deeply meaningful and sacred international relationship unites St. Michael and St. George Church with Ukraine: the parish maintains an official sister parish relationship with the Church of the Holy Apostle Andrew the First-Called and All Saints in Bucha, Kyiv Oblast. This spiritual kinship became especially poignant following the traumatic events of early 2022, creating an unbreakable bond of prayer, reciprocal solidarity, and memorial remembrance between the faithful of Minneapolis and the heroic community of Bucha.

Wartime Ministry: Pastoral Care for Wounded Soldiers at the PROTEZ Foundation

Since the launch of the full-scale invasion against Ukraine, Minneapolis has become a primary global center for prosthetic rehabilitation through the PROTEZ Foundation, which brings severely wounded Ukrainian defenders to Minnesota for state-of-the-art bionic prosthetics, physical therapy, and holistic recovery.

Under the leadership of pastor Very Rev. Father Myron Korostil, St. Michael and St. George Parish serves as the spiritual and human anchor for these brave Ukrainian soldiers during their time in the United States. Parishioners prepare homemade Ukrainian meals, provide hospital transportation, organize spiritual counseling, and host communal dinners at the parish hall. His Eminence Archbishop Daniel conducts regular archpastoral visits to the PROTEZ Foundation accompanied by Father Myron, anointing the soldiers, presenting them with blessed prayer ropes, and ministering to their emotional and spiritual trauma.
