What is the holiday today: October 1 – Protection of the Theotokos, folk traditions, prohibitions of the day and strong prayer

What is the holiday of October 1 today? Protection of the Theotokos is one of the greatest and most beloved holidays of the Orthodox world, which according to the new Julian calendar of the OCU and UGCC is now celebrated on October 1 (previously, October 14 according to the old style). On this day, the Church remembers the strange apparition of the Most Holy Theotokos in the Blacherna Church of Constantinople in the 10th century, when the Mother of God, having filled the sky with prayers, unfolded her honest omophorion over the faithful — and the city was saved from the enemy. Today, together with Protection of the Theotokos, Ukraine commemorates the Day of Defenders of Ukraine and the Day of the Ukrainian Cossacks, as well as the memory of the Apostle Ananias of the Seventy, the Venerable Roman Solodkopivets and the martyr Domnin of Thessalonica. That’s why thousands of believers are looking for answers to questions about folk customs of the day, strict prohibitions, name days and strong prayer under Protection of the Theotokos of the Most Holy.

Orthodox holiday October 1: the history of Protection of the Theotokos

The time when the miracle happened is the 10th century, Constantinople. The city, which for centuries was an impregnable stronghold of Christianity, then experienced difficult times: the enemy army stood under the walls, and the townspeople, left without human hope, found refuge only in prayer. In all churches, day and night, prayers were not interrupted, and in the Blacherna church, where the girdle of the Immaculate Conception was kept, many faithful gathered. Among them was the venerable Andrew, a fool, whom the Lord honored to see the heavenly things: he, raising his eyes, saw how in the air, surrounded by saints – prophets, apostles, the forerunner John – the Holy Virgin was walking, holding in her hands an unfolded honest omophorus, and the light of her face shone like the sun.

Stunned Andrew, turning to his disciple blessed John, asked if he saw the same thing. “I see, father, I see,” replied John, “and I fall to the ground in fear.” Then the saints accompanying the Mother of God came out to meet her with great respect and joy, and the Virgin, approaching the throne, fell on her knees and prayed for a long time with tears for the Church and the entire Christian race. After the prayer, she took off the bright omophorus and, stretching out her hands, spread it over everyone who was standing in the temple, thereby covering the city from the enemy’s influx. And the enemy besieging Constantinople retreated, and the city was saved. It is precisely this event that the Church calls Protection of the Theotokos: the Mother of God became for the faithful an intercessor, a shadow that covers from calamity.

The legend connects the phenomenon with the reign of the Byzantine emperor Leo the Wise. According to other stories, the honest omophorus saved the city in the same way twice more — in 911 and 926, when the enemies tried to take Constantinople by surprise. Therefore, the holiday of Protection of the Theotokos is honored as a holiday of protection: it reminds that the Church is never without the intercession of the Most Pure, and believers are always under her invisible cover. In Ukraine, the holiday gained special power: the Cossacks considered the Mother of God to be their patroness, the Zaporozhians registered under her omophorus, and nowadays people turn to Protection of the Theotokos for the protection of soldiers, for peace and for the liberation of Ukraine.

Folk traditions on October 1: Protection of the Theotokos is the root of weddings and a Cossack holiday

In the Ukrainian tradition, Protection of the Theotokos is one of the richest dates in customs. The folk saying goes like this: “Protection of the Theotokos covers the grass with leaves, the earth with snow, and the maiden with a wedding crown”. It was from Protection of the Theotokos that the wedding season opened in Ukraine: until this day, girls did not get married, and after the holiday they asked the Mother of God for a happy fate and a blessing for marriage. At vespers, they sang prayer songs: “Mother, cover us with your fair covering”, believing that whoever will kneel before the Protection of the Theotokos icon on this day, therefore Prechista will indicate a good couple and protect married life from quarrels.

The second great tradition is the Cossack holiday. Zaporizhia Sich had its own Protection of the Theotokos temple, and all Cossacks considered themselves under the special patronage of the Mother of God: “Cossacks are under the Protection of the Theotokos of the Mother of God.” Under her image, every Cossack took a military oath, and the foreman blessed the marches. Nowadays, this tradition is joined by the Day of Defenders of Ukraine and the Day of the Ukrainian Cossacks – believers carry candles to churches for the health and wounded soldiers, for the captured and missing, asking the Most Holy One to cover them with her omophorion. Housewives prepare pies with cabbage and mushrooms, a honey loaf for the holiday and invite travelers and the poor to the table, because “on Protection of the Theotokos, a stranger at the table is God’s grace in the house.”
