A Quarter-Century of Mountain Ministry (1998–Present)

The parish’s history is deeply intertwined with the archpastoral ministry of His Eminence Metropolitan Antony, Primate of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA. In June 1998, Metropolitan Antony personally helped plant the spiritual seeds of the mission in the Charlottesville area to serve Orthodox academic faculty, professionals, and Ukrainian-American families settled near the University of Virginia and surrounding Albemarle County.

In 2009, having outgrown its initial missionary stage, the community was consecrated as a full canonical parish. Skilled craftsmen from within the congregation expanded and renovated the nave, creating an intimate, prayerful house of God. In June 2023, Metropolitan Antony returned to Greenwood to lead the parish in celebrating its joyous 25th Silver Jubilee Anniversary, culminating in a hierarchical liturgy for the Leave-taking of Holy Pentecost.

Sacred Interior and the 1,600-Photo Mosaic Icon

Set amidst green pastures and apple orchards, the temple at 7581 Rockfish Gap Turnpike features traditional Orthodox appointments:

  • The Holy Altar & Iconostas: A reverently crafted wooden iconostas separates the altar sanctuary from the nave, displaying canonical icons of Christ the Savior, the Mother of God, and Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker of Myra.
  • The Historic 1,600-Photo Mosaic Icon: During the 25th anniversary festivities, rector Father Michael Abrahamson presented Metropolitan Antony with a unique artistic tribute: an icon of Saint Nicholas composed entirely as a photographic mosaic of roughly 1,600 photographs documenting every baptism, wedding, divine service, and fellowship gathering across the parish’s 25-year history.
  • Liturgical Choral Tradition: The St. Nicholas parish choir, long directed by Subdeacon James Guba, is celebrated for its reverent execution of traditional Kyivan and Byzantine chant melodies.

Charitable Heritage and Frontline Aid to Ukraine

Emulating the legendary generosity of its patron, Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker, the parish has established an enduring charitable legacy. Each year, the congregation presents the St. Nicholas Award to individuals who have served with distinction in missionary and philanthropic endeavors. The parish has also sent volunteer mission teams to impoverished rural communities in Southwest Virginia (Buchanan County) for home repairs and youth ministry.

Since 2022, St. Nicholas Parish has mobilized dedicated fundraisers, shipping battlefield first-aid supplies, trauma dressings, and direct monetary contributions to the Consistory of the UOC of the USA for the relief of suffering families and hospital patients in Ukraine.
