Saint Catherine of Alexandria (Greek: ἡ Ἁγία Αἰκατερίνη ἡ Μεγαλομάρτυς; c. 287–305 AD) is one of the most venerated saints in the Christian world. Her life is a magnificent testament to how true Divine Wisdom triumphs over human philosophy, and how sincere faith proves stronger than imperial torture. She is the heavenly patroness of students, philosophers, teachers, and scholars, as well as a powerful intercessor for young women praying for a happy marriage and pregnant women seeking a safe delivery.
Life and Martyrdom
Saint Catherine was born into a noble family in Alexandria, Egypt—the intellectual capital of the Roman Empire at the time. According to tradition, she was exceptionally beautiful and received a brilliant education, studying the works of all the prominent ancient philosophers, poets, and physicians. Many wealthy and noble young men sought her hand in marriage, but Catherine told her parents that she would only marry someone who surpassed her in beauty, wealth, nobility, and wisdom.
Her mother, a secret Christian, took her daughter to her spiritual father—a holy hermit. He told the girl, “I know a Youth who incomparably surpasses you in everything. His beauty is brighter than the sun, His wisdom governs all creation.” The elder gave her an icon of the Mother of God holding the Infant Jesus. After praying fervently, Catherine saw the Virgin Mary in a dream, but the Infant turned His face away from her, saying she was ugly and poor because she was not washed by the waters of Baptism.
After receiving Holy Baptism from the elder, Catherine had another vision: this time, the Lord looked at her with love and gave her a ring as a sign of spiritual betrothal (the so-called “mystical marriage of Saint Catherine”).
Soon, the Emperor Maximian arrived in Alexandria and organized a grand pagan festival with human sacrifices. Catherine boldly approached the emperor and wisely exposed the error of idolatry. Struck by her beauty and intellect, the emperor summoned the 50 greatest philosophers of the empire to refute her faith. But Catherine, filled with the Holy Spirit, completely dismantled their arguments. The philosophers admitted their defeat and embraced Christianity, for which the emperor ordered them burned alive.
Catherine herself was subjected to brutal torture. She was tied to a spiked wheel (now known as the Catherine wheel), but an Angel of the Lord descended from heaven and shattered the instrument of torture. Seeing this miracle, the emperor’s wife Augusta, the military commander Porphyrius, and 200 soldiers converted to Christ and were also martyred. Ultimately, the emperor ordered Catherine beheaded with a sword. Milk, rather than blood, flowed from her neck, and her body was carried by Angels to Mount Sinai.

Main Prayer for Intercession and Wisdom
O holy Great Martyr Catherine, chosen vessel of purity, pillar of orthodoxy, our reliable intercessor! You who lawfully struggled and confessed Christ, we pray to you: incline to our prayers. Obtain for us from the Lord God wisdom in our endeavors, success in our studies, and purity of heart. Beg for us the forgiveness of our sins and preserve us from every temptation. That we, enlightened by the grace of God, may blamelessly walk the path of this earthly life and together with you glorify the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit forever. Amen.
Prayer for a Happy Marriage
O holy Great Martyr Catherine! You who became the Bride of Christ and preserved your purity, look upon my heart that desires family happiness. Help me to find a pious life companion, with whom we may build a Christian family in love, fidelity, and the fear of God, raise children for the glory of God, and attain salvation. Amen.
Troparion and Kontakion (Eastern Tradition)
Troparion, Tone 4: By your virtues as by the rays of the sun you enlightened the unbelieving philosophers, and like the most bright moon to those walking in the night you drove away the darkness of unbelief; you convinced the empress, and also chastised the tyrant, God-summoned bride, blessed Catherine. You hastened with joy to the heavenly bridal chamber, to the beautiful Bridegroom Christ, and were crowned by Him with a royal crown; standing before Him with the angels, pray for us who keep your most sacred memory.
Kontakion, Tone 2: You have set up a noble choir of glorious martyrs, O wise Catherine, who joyfully suffered for Christ; for you preached Christ, and having trampled the serpent, you subdued the knowledge of the orators.
The Monastery on Mount Sinai
In the 6th century, the Emperor Justinian founded a monastery on Mount Sinai near the Burning Bush. The monks of the monastery, having received a revelation, found the incorrupt relics of Saint Catherine (her head and left hand) on a nearby peak, where, according to tradition, they had been carried by Angels. Since then, the monastery has borne her name—Saint Catherine’s Monastery. It is one of the oldest continuously functioning Christian monasteries in the world, preserving a priceless library and ancient icons. Pilgrims who venerate the saint’s relics are traditionally gifted a silver ring with the monogram “ΑΓΙΑ ΑΙΚΑΤΕΡΙΝΑ” (Saint Catherine) in memory of the great martyr’s mystical betrothal to Christ.
