The angelic hosts today stand before Thee, O Lord Christ, as Thou art seen, to cleanse Adam’s sin in the Jordan’s streams, and beholding this great divine mystery, they glorify Thy great condescension, for Thou, O God, hast become man and hast come, not knowing sin, as the Lamb of God, to take away the sins of the whole world. Therefore, glorifying the divine manifestation of Christ, let us sing to Him as in Bethlehem:

This is the One who frees us from sorrow. This is the One who, in place of slaves, makes us sons of God. This is the One who, with the water of the Divine Baptism, enlightens humanity from darkness. Behold, this is the Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world. Behold, we cry out to You:

Having the wealth of mercy, You came to the Jordan River, Jesus, not tolerating that humanity, created by God, should be tormented by the devil, but You came to say to the fallen Adam: “Where are you? Do not hide from Me. I wish to see you, whether you are naked or poor, and I will be like you, so that you will not be ashamed.” Therefore, we proclaim Your great condescension, crying out to You thus:
Glory to You, Good Shepherd, who seek out the lost sheep;
Glory to You, Only-Begotten Son, who came down to take upon Yourself our infirmities;
Glory to You, Immeasurable Mercy, who came down to the fallen humanity;

The Forerunner was filled with thoughts of doubt, Christ, King, when You, as a man, came to the river and wished to receive the slave’s baptism from him, saying: Stretch out your hand and touch Me, and let all be shaken with fear, fulfilling the command. Then the Forerunner trembled and cried out, saying: Lord, what have You come to the slave for, who is not defiled? What do You command me, as if I were above You? I have never measured the number of the heavenly heights, nor have I ever measured the earth. How can I baptize the One who holds the universe in His hand? How can the lamp of the Light enlighten? How can the slave place his hand on the Lord? I demand that You baptize me, so that I may sing to You:

When the All-merciful Lord, who loves humanity, heard the humble words of the Forerunner, beholding his fear, He spoke to him: “Well done, O John, for you reverence Me, but now leave and put aside your fear, for you must serve Me, thus it is fitting for us to fulfill every righteousness, that in Me the sins of humanity may be cleansed.” Hearing this merciful word of Yours, we cry out to You with love:
Glorify You, Christ, true Light, for mercy and truth have met You;
Glorify You, King of Righteousness, for righteousness and peace have kissed You.
Glorify You, O Sweetest Jesus, for Your truth has shone forth from Bethlehem;
Glorify You, Most Merciful Savior, for Your righteousness has descended from heaven in the Jordan.

O River of Godly Bounty, Lord, You have ascended in the streams of the Jordan, that You may wash away human sin with waters: The awe of beholding the Creator of heaven and earth in the river, and the servant receiving baptism, was seen. The angelic powers marveled, and the Jordan River itself returned its streams, unable to endure the fire consuming its waters, for it is not customary for the Pure One to be polluted and the Guiltless One to be defiled. Therefore, rejoice, O Jordan River, and let the springs and lakes rejoice, and all the depths and seas, for the watery nature has been sanctified today, freed from the prince of darkness, and all creation rejoicing, let us sing with them:

Beholding Thee, O Divine Lord, John the Baptist saw Thee, the Master of creation, being baptized in the waters, that Thou mightest immerse the sins of the entire world, and, having stripped Thee of Thy glory, Thou mightest again clothe Adam’s nakedness in the garment of glory. Trembling with awe, and crying out to Thee, O Lamb of God, who cleanses the sins of the world, I say to Thee: “I dare not approach Thy glory, O Lord, for Thou art the Life, the Light, and the Peace of the world.”
However, at Thy command, I shall place my hand in fear upon Thy Divine Head, and, having baptized Thee, O Immaculate One, I shall cry out to Thee with joy:
Glorify Thee, O Lamb of God, who hast taken upon Thyself the sins of the entire world;

The wondrous preacher and Forerunner, John, spoke many words to the people, that they might prepare the way for Thee, O Lord, but he was silent when Thou camest to the Jordan, for Thou Thyself didst say to him: “Do not speak to Me, for I have spoken to the lawless and have taught sinners, but only baptize Me in silence.” It was not fitting for the voice of a human to be proclaimed, when the Word of God had come and such a mystery was being accomplished, when the Angels of God stood in awe and all creation trembled. Therefore, we, in deep silence and with great reverence, cry out in our hearts:

When, O Lord Christ, Thou wast baptized in the Jordan, a great illumination and a fearful mystery shone forth to the entire world. Thou didst ascend from the waters, “summoning with Thee peace,” and the heavens, which Adam had closed for himself and for those who came from him, were opened to Thee, that, being reborn by Thee, men might ascend to the heavenly habitations, where they might sing to Thee with joy:
Glorify Thee, O King of Peace, who hast destroyed the middle wall of enmity;
Glorify Thee, O Giver of mercy, who hast opened the paradise, which had been closed by disobedience;

Although Thou, O Man-loving Lord, dost save the world perishing in sins, manifest Thy great mystery of the Trinitarian Theophany, and as in the beginning of the earthly existence the Divine Spirit didst dwell upon the waters, as the Giver of Life, so also in Thy Baptism, O Lord, when Thou didst desire to renew and enlighten the perishing human race and all creation with us, the same Holy Spirit didst descend from heaven, opened in the form of a dove, and didst rest upon Thee, O Lord, as upon the new Adam, in order that from henceforth He might abide in the newly baptized people, born of water, that they, clothed with power from above, might begin to walk in the renewal of the spirit, singing to God:

Thou hast shown us a new creation, O Ruler of the universe, in Thy saving Baptism by John, for just as Thou didst destroy the sins of the first world by the flood, so also didst Thou destroy the sins of the whole world in the waters of Jordan, creating anew the earthly-born by fire and Spirit and water, performing a wondrous resurrection and renewal. For Thou dost create souls by the Spirit, and dost sanctify the body by water, building up man, and thus, in a mysterious way, Thou dost make the many-membered Church from the water, by the Spirit, that we may ever cry to Thee:

It is a wondrous and divine manifestation of the Holy Trinity on the Jordan: first, the Beloved Son appeared in the flesh to the servant being baptized, and then the Holy Spirit descended in the form of a dove, and finally, the Most Holy Father proclaimed from heaven, bearing witness: “This is My Beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” O, great and glorious mystery: “The Lord thundered from heaven, and the Most High gave His voice,” that the prophecy of David, the ancestor, may be fulfilled: “The voice of the Lord on the waters, the God of Glory thunders, the Lord on many waters. The voice of the Lord in strength, the voice of the Lord in majesty.” Therefore, we, unworthy, cry out to You with our lips from the depths of our soul:

You are everywhere in the heavens, Jesus, dwelling with the Father on high, yet you do not depart from the lowest, born of the Immaculate Virgin in Bethlehem, and now appearing on the Jordan to the whole world, that those sitting in darkness and the shadow of death may be enlightened by the light of Your Theophany. Therefore, enlightened by the light of the Trinitarian Revelation, we cry out to You, who have appeared as God, and have been seen on earth, and have enlightened the world:
Glory to You, O Son of God, worshipped with the Father and the Spirit in the heavens;
Glory to You, O Son of God, praised by the Forerunner from the lowest;
Glory to You, who sit at the right hand of the Father, proclaimed by the Father’s voice from heaven, and have been incarnate for our sake, the Beloved Son of God, named by Him for the whole world;

All the angelic nature was astonished at the great mystery of Your Theophany, O Christ. For You, by the Jordan’s waters, did renew the withered Adam, and did crush the unseen serpents dwelling there, in Your Baptism. And thus, You did reveal the “depths of the abyss” and the “bottom” of the satanic “deep,” that You might deliver us from those “deep waters” and begin to build Your Kingdom, which is not of this world, as the prophet David foretold, saying: “Your Kingdom is an eternal kingdom, and Your dominion is from generation to generation.” And we, with the heavenly hosts, do hymn You, crying out:

The divine and angelic Forerunner, foretold by Malachi, O Lord, was the only one among men who was deemed worthy to behold the coming of the Spirit in Your Baptism and to hear the paternal voice from heaven, testifying to Your divine Sonship. May he be the first to proclaim the Theophany of the Triune God to the whole world. On the second day, he testified to the people, saying: “I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it remained upon Him… And I did not see the Spirit, but I bore witness that this is the Son of God.” We, hearing this divine testimony, do hymn Your Theophany, O Christ, singing to You thus:
Glorify You, O God, Eternal, testified to from heaven by the manifestation of the Holy Spirit;
Glorify You, O Immaculate Lamb, proclaimed by the Forerunner’s voice on earth;
Glorify You, O Highest Refuge, who, by opening the heavenly gates over the Jordan, did reveal to us the paradise that was closed;
Glorify You, O Eternal Mercy, who, by Your Baptism, did reveal to humanity a new world, freed from the waters of the Jordan;

Save, O Christ our Savior, the fallen and impoverished nature of ours, for You came to the Jordan River to the sinners and tax collectors, and You received baptism from John, when all people were baptized, that You might take upon Yourself all those immersed in the waters, the sins of men, as the Lamb of God, and be prepared from then on, by Your will, to sacrifice Yourself to redeem the sins of the whole world with Your precious blood. For this reason, You plunged Yourself into the Jordan’s streams, that You might be buried there, and prepare Yourself for Your mortal baptism, of which You said to the suffering: “I have been baptized, and I am suffering until it is fulfilled.” For this reason, we thankfully sing to You:

O Eternal King Christ Jesus! You came to the Jordan in manifestation to the whole world, to resolve the condemnation of the first Adam, as the All-merciful Judge, testing the hearts of all, and to give new life to men. For this reason, You took the cleansing broom in Your hand, and with Your wisdom, You cleansed the whole earth, separating, as the Shepherd, the sheep from the goats. Grant us, in the name of the Holy Trinity, to those baptized, to seek the right hand parts of the saved in this life, that it may be pleasing to You to hear our message to You:
Sovereign glory to You, Archiereus, who have passed through the heavens in Your Baptism, and have made the whole earth unheavenly;
Sovereign glory to You, Great Shepherd of the sheep, who came to Your flock on the Jordan;
Sovereign glory to You, who have founded the earth on waters, and have renewed our whole earth with the grace of the Spirit through the waters of the Jordan;

Let all creation sing to You, O Christ, a new hymn, born of the Virgin and baptized in the Jordan today. May all people rejoice spiritually, glorifying the radiant feast of our enlightenment, and with the divine Gregory, let us sing, saying: “The time of resurrection – let us be reborn from above, the day of creation – let us be clothed in the New Adam, the feast of enlightenment – let us be enlightened divinely,” that we may begin to walk in the renewal of the spirit, having been led forth with the angels, singing the heavenly hymn:

O Christ, radiant and self-existent Light, co-eternal with the Light of the One Father! You kindled in the Jordan, as a lamp, Your pure Flesh, and You shone forth, as the Sun, and You granted to the universe a great and invisible light of Your grace and truth in Your Baptism, illuminating every man who is to come into the world, that people sitting in darkness and the shadow of death may see the great light and go forth in its path. Enlighten us, therefore, on the great day of Lights, and those of us who are still wandering in the darkness of sin, that, enlightened, renewed, and exalted, we may sing to You thus:

The saving grace of God has appeared today in Your Baptism, O Christ, Savior: You came to the Jordan, O Pure One, to cleanse human transgressions and to crush the heads of the serpents dwelling there, that You might grant the gift of Baptism, a decisive gift to the souls and bodies of all men. For this reason, we hasten with reverence to the pure sources, to draw with joy the water of life, for the grace of the Spirit is invisibly bestowed upon all who draw from it with faith, and the hidden gifts and knowledge of the Spirit, O Savior, we shall all thanksgiving sing to You:

Let us sing, O Christ, of Thy saving Epiphany, and all of us in the waters of the Jordan glorify Thy divine Baptism, and we bow down to Thy inexpressible condescension to fallen humanity, and we believe with the Forerunner, for Thou art truly the Lamb of God, Who takest upon Thyself from the waters of the Jordan the sins of the whole world, and Who dost wash and cleanse them with Thy Most Pure Blood. For this reason, we beseech Thee: bear with us also our countless transgressions, and do not deprive us on the great day of Thy blessed resurrection of the gift of regeneration, that we may thankfully cry out to Thee with a pure heart thus:

Thou hast been raised as the Commander, O King of heaven and earth, Thou hast been seen by us, O Illuminator, in the Jordan, as Thou dost baptize the servant, and the heavens are shaken, and the whole earth is trembling, and the angels are amazed, and all creation is rejoicing. We, unworthy ones, give thanks to Thee and cry out: Thou hast appeared to sinners and outcasts, that Thou mightest wash away the sins of humanity with the waters.

Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, Only-begotten, born before all ages from the Father, Light from Light, enlightening all things, in the last days, Thou hast been incarnate from the Holy Virgin Mary, and hast come into this world for our salvation! Thou didst not endure to see the human race, which was being tormented by the devil, and therefore, on the radiant day of Thy Theophany, Thou didst come to the Jordan to be baptized by John, who was without sin, that Thou mightest fulfill all righteousness and mightest wash away the sins of the whole world, as the Lamb of God, that Thou mightest take them upon Thyself and redeem them by the baptism of the Cross, with Thy precious Blood. Therefore, having plunged into the waters, the heavens, which had been closed by Adam, were opened to Thee, and the Holy Spirit descended upon Thee in the form of a dove, bearing enlightenment and deification to our nature, and Thy Most Holy Father, the Unbegotten One, proclaimed His good pleasure to Thee with a heavenly voice, because Thou hast fulfilled His will and hast taken upon Thyself the sins of humanity, and hast already prepared Thyself for sacrifice, as Thou didst say: “For this reason, the Father loves Me, because I lay down My life, that I might take it again,” and thus, on this most radiant day, Thou hast established the beginning of our salvation from the ancestral fall.
