St. Mary Protectress Ukrainian Orthodox Parish in Milwaukee (Wisconsin)

St. Mary Protectress Ukrainian Orthodox Parish (St. Mary’s Ukrainian Orthodox Church) in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, is one of the oldest and most historic houses of worship in the city and the foundational spiritual sanctuary for Ukrainian Orthodox Christians across southeastern Wisconsin. Located at 1231 West Scott Street in Milwaukee’s historic Walker’s Point neighborhood, this venerable wooden church building dates to 1859 and has served as a consecrated home of Ukrainian prayer, cultural identity, and immigrant solidarity for over a century (1917–present). It belongs to the Western Eparchy of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA under the canonical jurisdiction of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople.

Over a Century of Ukrainian Heritage in Milwaukee (1917–Present)

The architectural origins of the church building date back to 1859, when it was initially erected by early Norwegian settlers. In 1917, during the tumultuous events of World War I and the Ukrainian War of Independence, a burgeoning community of Ukrainian immigrants working in Milwaukee’s foundries, tanneries, and manufacturing plants came together to establish a permanent spiritual hearth. The Ukrainian faithful acquired the historic Scott Street sanctuary, consecrated it to the Holy Protection of the Mother of God (Pokrova), and installed traditional Orthodox liturgical appointments.

For more than one hundred consecutive years, St. Mary’s has preserved the Ukrainian language, sacred choral singing, and Eastern Orthodox rituals in the heart of Wisconsin. Generations of Ukrainian families—from the early pioneers of the 1910s, through the political refugees of World War II, to contemporary newcomers—have been baptized, married, and spiritually sustained within its historic walls.

Historic Architecture and Sacred Interior

Honored as one of the ten oldest churches still standing in the city of Milwaukee, the sanctuary at 1231 West Scott Street possesses singular architectural and historical value:

  • The Bell Tower and Spire: The wood-framed exterior is crowned by a high bell tower with an octagonal wooden shingled spire, topped by a golden Ukrainian Orthodox three-bar cross that rises over Walker’s Point.
  • The Portal & Azure Steps: Worshippers ascend a prominent flight of azure-painted front steps to a portico sheltered by a semicircular arch inscribed with “ST. MARY’S UKRAINIAN ORTHODOX CHURCH”, framing an icon of the Mother of God extending Her protective omophorion.
  • The Carved Gilded Iconostas: Inside the nave, a beautifully carved wooden iconostas stands before the holy altar, crowned by an illuminated golden cross over the Royal Doors, adorned with canonical icons of Christ the Pantocrator, the Theotokos, and patronal saints.
  • Stained Glass Windows & Chandelier: Arched stained-glass perimeter windows in brilliant cobalt blues and ruby reds illuminate the nave, complemented by traditional crystal chandeliers, embroidered Ukrainian rushnyky, and commemorative banners.

Civic Recognition and Mayoral Proclamation

The profound civic significance of St. Mary’s was formally recognized by the Mayor of the City of Milwaukee, the Honorable Cavalier Johnson, who issued an official mayoral proclamation commending the parish for its century of unwavering service to the Walker’s Point neighborhood and its unyielding defense of Ukrainian sovereignty.

The parish has enjoyed the archpastoral leadership of His Eminence Archbishop Daniel, Ruling Hierarch of the Western Eparchy, who regularly visits the parish to celebrate the Divine Liturgy, encourage the youth, and meet with parish leadership, including Parish Council President Sophia Torcivia.

Humanitarian Mission and Relief for Ukraine

With nearly all parish families having relatives, children, or siblings directly enduring the horrors of war in Ukraine, St. Mary Protectress Parish has mobilized as an active philanthropic bridge between Milwaukee and the Ukrainian homeland. The congregation holds recurring fundraisers, assembling medical kits, blankets, winter apparel, and hygiene supplies, while sending financial contributions through the UOC of the USA Consistory Relief Fund.

The parish also serves as a compassionate landing place for newly arrived Ukrainian refugees settling in Milwaukee County, providing fellowship, translation aid, and cultural warmth.
