Holy Ascension Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Maplewood, New Jersey, is a venerable and active Orthodox parish community in Essex County with a spiritual history spanning more than 108 years. Located at 650–652 Irvington Avenue, the church stands as a shining sanctuary of Byzantine-Ukrainian architecture, distinguished by its rustic fieldstone entrance arches, brilliant golden dome and cross, and an exquisite external mosaic of the Ascension of Our Lord. Dedicated to the miraculous Ascension of Jesus Christ into heaven, the parish unites generations of Ukrainian Americans in deep liturgical prayer, community service, and energetic humanitarian support for Ukraine.

Century of Faith: The Historical Roots in Greater Newark
The origins of Holy Ascension parish trace back to the First World War era in the late 1910s. During the first two decades of the twentieth century, thousands of Ukrainian immigrants arrived in the industrial centers of Essex County, New Jersey, particularly Newark, Irvington, and neighboring townships. These industrious immigrants worked in local leather tanneries, metal refineries, textile mills, and transportation hubs across northern New Jersey.
United by a common longing to preserve their Orthodox faith and cultural identity, early Ukrainian families gathered to organize church brotherhoods and worship services. Established formally during this pioneering period, Holy Ascension parish grew steadily as a pillar of religious and national life. The community survived the severe economic trials of the Great Depression by pooling modest family resources, hosting traditional Ukrainian food sales, and cultivating a deep spirit of Christian solidarity.
Following the conclusion of World War II, Holy Ascension experienced a major spiritual and demographic renaissance. The parish welcomed hundreds of newly arrived displaced persons (DPs) and political refugees of the third Ukrainian immigration wave. These new parishioners brought deep theological education, artistic talents, choral expertise, and an unwavering commitment to the cause of a free and sovereign Ukraine, transforming the parish into one of the most vibrant centers of Ukrainian diaspora life in northern New Jersey.
Architectural Harmony and Sacred Artistry
The church sanctuary at 650–652 Irvington Avenue represents a unique and harmonious architectural synthesis. Constructed of durable light-brown brickwork, the façade is strikingly accentuated by monumental, round-arched entry bays trimmed in natural split fieldstone. This organic masonry imparts a timeless, fortress-like aesthetic reminiscent of early Christian rock-hewn sanctuaries and medieval Kyivan stone churches.
Dominating the upper central bay above the main entrance is a magnificent mosaic icon of the Ascension of Our Lord (Вознесіння Господнє). Executed with shimmering tesserae in radiant blues, gold, and vibrant earth tones, the mosaic portrays the Savior ascending into glory amidst angelic hosts while the Virgin Mary and the Holy Apostles gaze upward in wonder. Rising above the roofline is a gleaming golden onion dome (cupola) crowned with a traditional three-bar Ukrainian Orthodox cross, proclaiming the sanctuary’s presence to all who travel along Irvington Avenue.

Interior Sanctuary and Liturgical Tradition
Inside, Holy Ascension Church welcomes worshippers into an atmosphere of radiant sanctity and serene prayer. Tall arched stained-glass windows line the northern and southern walls of the nave, casting brilliant jewel-toned light across the sanctuary floor during daytime Divine Liturgies. The sanctuary layout adheres faithfully to the ancient tripartite design of Orthodox architecture: narthex (vestibule), nave (body of the church), and the Holy Altar (sanctuary).
The holy nave is anchored by an intricately carved wooden iconostasis adorned with polished gold details. Hand-written Byzantine icons depict the Lord Jesus Christ, the Mother of God, the Archangels Michael and Gabriel on the deacons’ doors, and the patronal icon of the Ascension. Above the Royal Doors, the Mystical Supper (Last Supper) reminds the faithful of the Holy Eucharist. In accordance with cherished Ukrainian customs, the icons are adorned with hand-woven embroidered linens (rushnyky), symbolizing purity, hospitality, and dedication to God.
Parish Leadership, Ministries, and Cultural Life
Over the decades, Holy Ascension has been served by esteemed pastors, including the memorable long-term pastorate of Very Rev. Oleh Hucul. Today, the parish is led with vibrant pastoral energy by its rector, Rev. Fr. Sviatoslav Hot. Fr. Sviatoslav has fostered an inclusive, family-centered pastoral environment where worship services are offered in both Ukrainian and English, bridging generational divides and welcoming both ancestral families and inquirers into the Orthodox faith.
Parish community organizations play an indispensable role in church life:
- Parish Church School: Educating youth in the fundamentals of Orthodox catechism, scripture, prayer, and Ukrainian liturgical traditions.
- Sisterhood of Holy Ascension: Managing altar guild duties, church beautification, seasonal bake sales, traditional pierogi (varenyky) and cabbage roll (holubtsi) food drives, and parish fellowship banquets.
- Liturgical Choir: Maintaining a rich musical tradition of Ukrainian sacred polyphony, chanting settings by Bortniansky, Vedel, and traditional Galician and Kyivan congregational samohlasny chants.
- Cultural Celebrations: Sponsoring St. Nicholas pageants, Ukrainian Christmas carol sing-alongs (koliada), Easter basket blessings, and cultural exhibits.
The Maplewood Relief Mission for Ukraine
Following the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Holy Ascension parish immediately mobilized as an active regional collection point for emergency aid. In close coordination with the Consistory of the UOC of the USA, the Ukrainian American Cultural Center of New Jersey (UACCNJ), and local humanitarian networks, the parish has delivered immense material and spiritual support:
- Emergency Medical and Surgical Cargo: Procuring and air-shipping vital medical kits, trauma bandages, burn dressings, tactical stretchers, and over-the-counter pharmaceuticals to military medics and municipal hospitals in Ukraine.
- Disaster and Winter Relief: Collecting and shipping warm blankets, thermal base layers, sleeping bags, portable lighting, and power packs to civilians in liberated and war-ravaged communities.
- Aid to Displaced Families: Opening parish doors to Ukrainian mothers and children arriving in northern New Jersey, providing emergency financial stipends, clothing drives, food assistance, and educational placement.
- Unceasing Prayer for Victory and Peace: Holding regular molebens for peace and the protection of Ukraine’s defenders, maintaining the parish’s role as a moral and spiritual pillar for the community.
