The primary historical and theological source for the lives of Saints Joachim and Anne is the Protoevangelium of James (also known as the Gospel of James), an early Christian text dating back to the mid-second century (c. AD 150).
According to this venerable tradition, Joachim was a wealthy and pious man of the tribe of Judah, a descendant of King David. He regularly offered double sacrifices in the temple, demonstrating his deep devotion. Anne, his wife, was a woman of equal piety. However, their marriage bore a heavy cross: they were childless. In ancient Israel, barrenness was often perceived not merely as a personal tragedy, but as a sign of divine disfavor.
The text recounts a poignant moment when Joachim’s offerings were rejected at the temple by a priest named Ruben, who declared that a childless man was unworthy to offer sacrifices to God. Heartbroken, Joachim retreated to the wilderness to fast and pray for forty days and forty nights. Meanwhile, Anne remained at home, weeping bitterly over her dual sorrow: the reproach of her barrenness and the absence of her husband.
In her deep anguish, Anne went into her garden, looked up to heaven, and prayed with tears, promising that if God granted her a child, she would dedicate the child entirely to His service. God answered their faithful endurance. An angel of the Lord appeared simultaneously to both Anne and Joachim, announcing that their prayers had been heard. The angel revealed to Anne: “The Lord has heard your prayer, and you shall conceive, and shall bring forth, and your seed shall be spoken of in all the world.”
Overjoyed, Joachim returned to Jerusalem with his flocks, and Anne ran to meet him at the Golden Gate of the city. Their joyful embrace at the Golden Gate has become a classical motif in Christian iconography, symbolizing the miraculous and immaculate conception of Mary. True to their vow, when Mary reached the age of three, Joachim and Anne presented her at the Temple in Jerusalem, consecrating her entirely to the service of God.

The role of Saint Anne in salvation history cannot be overstated. From a theological standpoint, she is the vessel chosen by God to bear the one who would become the Theotokos (God-bearer). Remember, O good Saint Anne, whose name means grace and mercy, that never was it known that anyone who fled to your protection, implored your help, or sought your intercession was left unaided. Inspired with this confidence, I fly unto you, good and kind mother; I take refuge at your feet, and, sinner as I am, I venture to appear before you, groaning under the weight of my sins. O holy Mother of the Immaculate Virgin Mary, despise not my petitions, but hear me and grant my prayer. Amen.

Glorious Saint Anne, filled with compassion for those who invoke you and with love for those who suffer! Shrines, Miracles, and Veneration
Devotion to Saint Anne spread rapidly in the Eastern Church by the 4th century, and a church was built in her honor in Jerusalem on the traditional site of her home (the present-day Basilica of Sainte-Anne). In the Western Church, her veneration became especially prominent during the Middle Ages. Her feast day is universally celebrated on July 26th.
One of the most famous sites of devotion to Saint Anne is the Basilica of Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré in Quebec, Canada. The shrine’s origins date back to 1658 when a local worker, Louis Guimont, who suffered from severe back pain, was miraculously cured while helping to build the first chapel. Since then, millions of pilgrims have visited the shrine, leaving behind crutches, braces, and walking sticks as visible testaments to the miraculous physical and spiritual healings obtained through Saint Anne’s intercession.
In Brittany, France, the shrine of Sainte-Anne-d’Auray marks the site where Saint Anne appeared in the 17th century to a simple peasant named Yves Nicolazic, directing him to unearth an ancient, buried statue of her. Her message to Yves was one of maternal care: “God wishes that I be honored here.” This site remains the most important place of pilgrimage in Brittany.
