Salvation by Faith or Works: How Biblical Grace and the Laws of Imagination Free You from Anxiety
Have you ever felt completely burned out from trying to be “perfect”? Every day, we plan, control, and try to earn our success, health, or peace of mind through sheer hard work. But a famous biblical verse from Ephesians 2:8-9 states quite the opposite:
“For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.”
This text is not merely a religious dogma; it is a fundamental psychological law of our consciousness. It explains why trying to “earn” happiness through physical effort often ends in frustration, and how we can learn to accept grace without guilt.
Why Trying to “Earn” Love and Success Is a Spiritual Trap
Many people unconsciously turn their relationship with God or the Universe into a transaction: “I will do a lot of good deeds, exhaust myself with obligations, and in return, You will give me peace and abundance.” In theology, this is known as attempting to be saved by the “works of the law.”
From a metaphysical perspective, when you operate this way, you make a spiritual error (the ancient Greek word hamartia, translated as “sin,” literally means “missing the mark”):
- You broadcast scarcity. The attempt to “earn” stems from the belief: “I am not good enough right now; I am not loved just as I am.” Since the world acts as a mirror to our consciousness, we receive even more circumstances in return where we feel unworthy.
- You block grace. Grace (Latin Gratia) is by definition an unearned gift. If you try to pay for it with labor, it turns into wages, losing its creative, transformative power.
The Principles of Sola Fide and Sola Gratia: The Foundation of Inner Freedom
During the Protestant Reformation of the 16th century, theologians formulated five key spiritual pillars (Five Solas), which perfectly describe the correct mechanics of interacting with the world:
- Sola Fide (By Faith Alone): A person is accepted by God not because of their merits, but solely through a state of complete trust (faith).
- Sola Gratia (By Grace Alone): Everything good comes into our lives as a gift that we must learn to receive without trying to “pay it back.”
Good deeds, success, and harmonious relationships are not the price with which the Creator’s favor is bought, but the natural result of already feeling filled, loved, and complete.
Turn Off the “Mental Calculator”: The Danger of Over-Control
Our ego loves to calculate and control everything. We often go to sleep with our “mental calculator” running, calculating risks, analyzing mistakes, and planning every step to prevent disaster.
In the Old Testament, there is a profound metaphor: when a census (counting) of the people was taken, everyone had to pay a ransom for their soul (Exodus 30:12). This signifies that trying to measure and calculate life always carries anxiety and fear. When we count our limited resources, we shrink our world. To break free from this fear, we must learn to “turn off the calculator” and trust the invisible Source.
How to Pray with Thanksgiving: The Example of Jesus Christ
Most people perceive prayer as a list of demands or pleas from a beggar to a king. However, Jesus demonstrated a completely different approach. His prayers were not pleas, but affirmations of fact that the desired result was already accomplished.
Before raising Lazarus, while the body was still in the tomb, Jesus did not beg for a miracle. He prayed like this:
“Father, I thank you that you have heard me.” (John 11:41)
When feeding the five thousand with only two fish and five loaves of bread, he did not calculate the food deficit. He simply gave thanks for what he had, and the resources multiplied to feed everyone. Giving thanks before the physical manifestation of a miracle is the highest form of faith.
Neville Goddard on the Law, the Promise, and the Power of “Thank You, Father”
This spiritual mechanism was described in detail by the famous 20th-century mystic Neville Goddard. He divided a person’s spiritual path into two parts:
- The Law: The principle that imagination creates our reality. Trying to change life through external actions without changing our state of consciousness is futile.
- The Promise: The realization of one’s unity with the Creator, spiritual awakening.
To put the Law into practice, Neville recommended the SATS technique (State Akin To Sleep) before bed. As you fall asleep, instead of anxiously dwelling on problems, imagine that your desire has already been fulfilled and loop a simple mantra in your mind: “Thank you, Father.”
This inner state of gratitude washes away the anxiety of control and tunes your subconscious to the frequency of abundance.
What Is the Difference Between “Thanking” and “Praising” God?
These two concepts are often confused, but they have different spiritual depths:
- Thanking is a reaction to what has been received. We give thanks for specific things: health, a new day, help. It focuses on the Creator’s actions.
- Praising (Glorifying) comes from the word “glory” (weight, visible presence). To praise is to give maximum weight to the Divine power in your consciousness. When you praise God for His greatness, you make your problems smaller and His power larger.
- Sanctifying (Setting Apart) is the ability to protect your mind from the doubts of the 3D world and set apart a sacred space for faith in what has not yet physically manifested.
Practical Steps: How to Transition from Anxiety to Grace
To stop exhausting yourself with attempts to earn and calculate everything, start practicing this simple routine every night:
- Leave your mental calculator out of bed. When you lie down to sleep, consciously stop analyzing unresolved tasks. Tell yourself: “I did all I could today. Now it is time to trust the Creator with the rest.”
- Sanctify (set apart) your time before sleep. Protect your thoughts from news and external opinions.
- Fall asleep in a state of gratitude. Repeat “Thank you, Father” to yourself, imagining your life is already under perfect divine care and guidance.
True salvation from anxiety and lack comes not through exhausting calculations, but through faith. Allow yourself to relax in the embrace of Divine grace.
