Veneration of the Holy Mother of God is one of the oldest and deepest traditions of the Christian world. For millions of believers, the Mother of God is the closest Intercessor to whom they turn in moments of sadness, illness and trials. Prayer to the Mother of God is full of childlike trust, because as the Mother of the Savior, she takes every human tear close to her heart.

Spiritual foundations of prayer: Christ’s words about the secret appearance

Turning to the Holy Mother of God, we must remember the instructions of her Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. In Gospel of Matthew 6:6 He teaches us to pray in secret: “And you, when you pray, go into your closet, shut your door, and pray to your Father who is in secret.”

This seclusion helps us to establish a sincere personal relationship with God and Jesus Christ, rejecting Pharisaic vanity and anxieties. Listen to the voice of the Holy Spirit who speaks in the silence of the heart, comforting and guiding us. The Savior also reminds: “For your Father knows what you need, even before you ask Him” (Gospel of Matthew 6:8). We need prayer in order to open our hearts to His all-encompassing grace.

Biblical examples: intercession of the Virgin Mary at the wedding in Cana

The apostle James teaches us: “But let him ask in faith, without doubting” (Epistle of James 1:6-7). In order for our faith to grow, we must regularly devote time to reading the Bible. In the Holy Scriptures, we find amazing testimonies about the role of the Most Holy Theotokos.

The most vivid biblical example of the intercession of the Virgin Mary is the story of the first miracle of Jesus at the wedding in Cana of Galilee (Gospel of John, chapter 2). When the wine ran out during the holiday, it was Mary who noticed this predicament and turned to the Son: “They don’t have wine.” And although Jesus replied that His time had not yet come, Mary with deep faith said to the servants: “Do whatever He tells you.” This story shows that Mary does not just pray for us, she teaches us total obedience to Christ. Jesus listened to her request and turned the water into the best wine. This biblical testimony calls us to trust in the intercession of the Mother of God, who always directs us to her Son.

Practice of inner peace (hesychasm) and trust in Love

The Hesychasts teach us to pray in the silence of the heart, using the image of the Mother of God as an example of contemplation and inner peace. Mary kept all the words in her heart, being at peace.

God loves each of us infinitely. In Padre Pio’s book “The Diary of Love” (written by Luigi Gaspari), the Lord reminds us that His love is unconditional, and the Mother of God is the embodiment of His mercy. Padre Pio famously taught: “Pray, hope and do not worry. Love the Mother of God, trust her, and she will bring your prayer to the throne of God.”

During prayer, imagine yourself under the warm, protective cover of the Holy Mother of God. Feel the joy and peace of giving thanks for the help as if it had already been received (this is the spiritual law of faith that Neville Goddard wrote about). Being in a state of protection is the key to hearing prayer.

Oh, Holy Lady, my Mother of God! I give you my life, my needs and my hopes. Take me under Your honest protection, protect me from all evil, visible and invisible enemies. Heal my mental and physical wounds, grant me peace of heart and peace of mind. Teach me to do the will of Your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. Be my Intercessor in times of trials and Comforter in times of sorrow. Amen.
