Manifestation, Kundalini, the Lumbar Serpent, and Neville Goddard from the perspective of Hesychasm

calendar_month

Today, the practices of manifestation, visualization of desires and awakening of Kundalini energy have become part of mass culture. Modern coaches and followers of the “New Thought” currents teach: imagination is the only creator of reality. However, ancient Christian mystics — hesychasts — more than a thousand years ago deeply investigated these mechanisms of the human psyche. Their verdict is harsh: what seems to modern man to be “spiritual awakening” or “reality control” is often a direct path to destructive illusion and enslavement by instincts.

To understand this danger, it is important to understand how visualization differs from true contemplation , and what role our own pride plays in it.

Pride: The main trap of visualizers

In manifestation practices, visualization is the main tool. The practitioner actively generates images in his head, saturating them with emotions in order to change the material world to suit the needs of his own Ego.

For a hesychast (a practicing Orthodox monk), any imagination in spiritual work is a disaster. Saint Gregory of Sinai categorically warned about the danger of accepting any images, lights, or visions. Why? Because visualization is based on pride .

When a person begins to manifest, he puts himself in the place of God, believing that his mind is the absolute creator. This spiritual pride is the perfect hook. As the holy fathers warn, when a person begins to fantasize about spiritual themes, having hidden vanity, the “prince of the air” (demonic forces) willingly throws up false images and a sense of “chosenness”. A person falls into a state of spiritual delusion (delusion).

Neville Goddard and the Illusion of “The Promise”

A vivid example of where uncontrolled play with the imagination can lead is the late mystical experience of the famous manifestation teacher Neville Goddard. Goddard directly taught that “The imagination of man is God.”

Towards the end of his life, he began to talk about his experience of what he called “The Promise.” He described incredible visions of waking up inside his own skull (as if in a tomb), being born from there, and later meeting the biblical King David, who called Neville his father. Goddard interpreted this as a sign that he himself had become the Creator God.

From the point of view of hesychasm, such visions are extremely dangerous and are a classic example of the deepest spiritual delusion . When a person’s mind is saturated with pride for a long time and trained in visualization, the line between reality and hallucination is erased. Demonic forces, playing on a person’s desire to become a deity, are able to construct entire mystical worlds, scrolling through the mind a movie with biblical characters and symbolic reincarnations in the skull. This is not spiritual enlightenment, but a virtual reality created in order to finally captivate the soul through its own vanity.

Kundalini Energy and the “Lumbar Serpent”

The worst begins when these games of imagination and wild fantasy begin to hit the physical body. In Eastern traditions, it is considered a great achievement to awaken Kundalini , the energy that sleeps in the form of a snake at the base of the spine.

The Hesychasts describe a strikingly similar physiological process, but give it a completely different, gloomy assessment. In the article “The Lumbar Serpent,” the author deeply analyzes this phenomenon. When the mind wanders in arrogant fantasies, a failure occurs: dark forces use these illusions to strike at the lower energy centers of a person (the navel and lower back).

Saint Gregory Palamas explains the anatomy of this fall: “In those who do not watch themselves, the mind becomes entangled and mixed with a licentious imagination .” And Saint Gregory of Sinai directly describes the “serpent”:

“This serpent, which nests in the navel and near the hips (lower back), inflames lust and inflames the body, corrupts the mind and immerses it in lustful dreams.”

What in yoga might be interpreted as “Kundalini awakening,” hesychasts diagnose as an attack by a demonic force that parasitizes on the lower instincts, using visualization as a trigger. Instead of holiness, a person gets emotional burnout, anxiety, or uncontrolled carnal lust.

“Thy Will Be Done”: Trusting the Father Instead of Self-Creation

The main conflict between modern manifestation theory and Christianity is the question of will. The manifester says: “My will is the law, I create my own future” (which is an expression of extreme spiritual pride). The Christian, in the most important prayer, “Our Father,” utters the fundamental words: “Thy will be done . ”

By uttering these words, a person completely renounces the ego-centric creation of their own will and trustfully places their life in the hands of God. This is not weakness, but the highest form of wisdom.

Christ in the Sermon on the Mount warned against man’s foolish attempts to “break through” the spiritual world with long demands or manipulative visualization techniques:

“And when you pray, do not say the same things over and over again… for your Father knows what you need before you ask him” (Matthew 6:7-8).

God doesn’t need us to paint detailed pictures of fancy cars or houses in our minds, trying to “convince” Him or the universe. Instead, Christ makes an incredible promise of love and protection:

“What father is there among you who, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a serpent instead of a fish? Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion?” (Luke 11:11-12).

There is a deep mystical meaning hidden here. When we are in a state of humility and ask God for spiritual and physical survival, He gives us life-giving bread (grace, peace, solutions to life’s problems). But when we, through pride, visualization and selfish manifestation, try to snatch what we want from the spiritual world ourselves, we encroach on what our soul is not ready for. Then instead of bread, we receive spiritual poison – the same “scorpion” or “snake” (spiritual delusion, passion of Kundalini, destruction of the psyche).

The Hesychastic Alternative: Prayer Without Imagination

True contemplation (hesychia) is the complete opposite of manifestation. It is the cessation of imagination and the surrender of our ego to the majesty of God.

Instead of imagining what is desired, the hesychasts use the Jesus Prayer : “Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner . ”

The main and unbreakable rule of this practice is No insults . During prayer, it is strictly forbidden to:

  1. Imagine the face of Jesus, saints, or angels.
  2. Visualize streams of light, energy, or scenes from the Bible.
  3. Seek mystical states, ecstasy, or visions.

The mind should be empty, formless, and focused only on the words of the prayer. The foundation of this practice is not pride (“I am the creator”), but deep repentance and humility . Only in absolute inner silence, when all fantasies are cut off, and the heart is cleansed of pride and self-reliance, is a person able to feel the true presence of God, and not an illusion painted by his own ego or “air spirits.”

Conclusion

The experience of the Hesychast Fathers and the warning about the “serpent in the loin” are rules of spiritual safety. Any attempt to forcefully “break through” the spiritual world through visualization, manifestation, or raising the Kundalini inevitably leads to a fall and exhaustion. The attempt to impose one’s will on God ends in an encounter with the serpent. True spiritual growth begins not where we imagine ourselves as gods, but where we say with complete trust “Thy Will be done” and in deep humility enter into silence.
