Prayer for Anxiety and Fear: Finding Peace Through Faith and Spiritual Silence

calendar_month

Anxiety, fear and panic thoughts are one of the biggest challenges for modern man. They paralyze our will, prevent us from making decisions and deprive us of the joy of life. However, the Christian spiritual experience offers a reliable antidote to fear—building a strong relationship with God and staying in His love, which conquers all anxiety.

Spiritual Refuge: Secret Prayer in Silence

When anxiety arises, panic is often the first reaction. However, Jesus Christ calls us to stop and enter into spiritual silence. In The Gospel of Matthew 6:6 He teaches: “And you, when you pray, go into your closet, shut your door, and pray to your Father who is in secret.”

Seclusion in your inner “cell” allows you to close the door of your soul to disturbing news and negative thoughts. This is the moment when you can open yourself to God and Jesus Christ, allowing the Holy Spirit to fill you with His peace. Remember that the Creator knows your every need beforehand: “For your Father knows what you need before you ask Him” (Gospel of Matthew 6:8). Prayer is needed in order to tune our minds to God’s presence, which already protects us.

The basis and reliable anchor in prayer are the words of the Lord’s prayer – Our Father.

Biblical lessons of faith: how Christ calms life’s storms

The apostle James teaches us about the power of prayer based on faith: “But let him ask in faith, without doubting” (Epistle of James 1:6-7). Faith comes from reading the Bible daily and being sensitive to the voice of the Holy Spirit. The Word of God contains amazing stories that teach us to overcome fear.

Jesus calms the storm at sea

The Gospel of Matthew describes an event when Jesus and his disciples were sailing in a boat, and suddenly a great storm arose, so that the waves covered the boat. The disciples panicked, woke up the Lord and shouted: “Save, Lord, we are perishing!” But Jesus said to them: “Why are you fearful, you of little faith?” Then He got up, ordered the winds and the sea, and there was a great silence (Gospel of Matthew 8:23-27). This story teaches us that when a “storm” of anxiety begins in our lives, we need to turn to Christ, who has the power to calm any storm in our heart.

Peter walks on water and overcomes doubts

Another instructive event occurred when the disciples saw Jesus walking toward them on the water in the middle of the night. Peter showed faith and said: “Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water.” Jesus said: “Go”. Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water looking at Jesus. However, when he looked at the strong wind, he got scared, began to sink and shouted: “Lord, save me!”. Jesus immediately stretched out his hand to him, supported him and said: O you of little faith, why did you doubt? (Gospel of Matthew 14:22-33). This story clearly demonstrates that when we focus on Christ, we can overcome any difficulties. But when we shift our attention to the external “wind” (problems and worries), we begin to drown in fear.

Practice of Hesychasm and Divine Love

In hesychasm, overcoming fear begins with the practice of inner silence of the mind. When anxiety strikes, don’t start an internal dialogue with your fears. Instead, quiet the mind and focus on the silent prayer of the heart: “Lord, have mercy”.

Remember that God loves each of us infinitely. In Padre Pio’s book “Diary of Love”, the Lord emphasizes that fear separates us from His grace. Padre Pio famously taught: “Pray, hope and do not worry. Your anxiety will not change the circumstances, but your faith and peace of heart will open the door to God’s power.

Use the power of imagination and faith (as Neville Goddard wrote about): Being in a sense of fulfillment (a peaceful state of mind) displaces fear and brings real relief from anxiety.

Prayer for anxiety and panic fear

The Lord’s Prayer

Say the words of our faith – Our Father:

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, let Thy kingdom come, let Thy will be done, both in heaven and on earth. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive our trespassers, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. For Thine is the kingdom, and power, and glory, forever. Amen.

Prayer to calm the mind from fear

Lord Jesus Christ, my Deliverer! I come to You with deep faith. Free my soul from the shackles of fear, panic and anxiety. You calmed the raging sea, calm my thoughts too. Send your Holy Spirit to give me peace of mind, courage and peace. I believe that Your all-encompassing love protects me every moment of my life. Amen.

Let us unite our hearts together: “For where two or three are gathered together in My Name, there I am in the midst of them” (Gospel of Matthew 18:20).
